Meetings usually involve a call for papers. Presentations are given by individuals choosing to use the chapter forum to discuss their research and/or management efforts. Meetings are excellent opportunities for presentation of work-in-progress reports and for students to relate ongoing research. They are especially important for students as they are often the their first introduction to the workings of a professional society and their first opportunity to present a paper before a professional society.
The chapter's annual business meeting is held in June. Besides electing new
officers, AFS attendees are briefed on matters pertaining to chapter, Northeast
division, and parent society business. This meeting gives AFS members an
opportunity to express their views on the parent society or Northeast division
activities or plans and, accordingly, to help establish chapter positions. In
this way, AFS members who might not be able to attend parent society and/or
division annual meetings, are able to influence their organization's attempts to
achieve its goals.
